Ahmedabad:
A former BJP MLA, Maya Kodnani, along with Bajrang Dal leader, Babu
Bajrangi, were sentenced 25-years life terms by special court for their alleged involvement in brutal Naroda
Patia incident. The court sentenced perpetrators life
imprisonment till death in connection with post-Godhra riot at
Naroda Patia which claimed 97 lives. Other than the duos, the court also sentenced life terms to
31 other convicts in this case.
Kodani,
a former member of legislative assembly in the then Modi-led
government of Gujrat, was sentenced 18-years life terms for plotting
murder and criminal conspiracy, and 10-years life terms for arson. The court also said that the convict wouldn't have to
serve both sentences contemporaneously.
Maya
Kodnani, who served ministry for women and child development from
2007-2009 in Gujrat, is believed to be the first political figure to
have been sentenced life terms in connection with country's worst riot ever.
Bajarangi
(55), another accused for Naroda Patia massacre, would serve the life
terms till death. The 22 convicts out of 31 were pronounced 14-years
moderate life imprisonment while the 7 convicts were awarded rigorous
31-years life terms. The court could not pronounce sentence to one
convict who was absent during the proceeding.
