From the impression of what I read, I gather that John conveyed his self-acknowledged and reverent “moral responsibility” towards constituting a society comprising educated people by extending his financial contribution to public school/s, for his credo (as it appears) is a straightforward conclusion for public school being a key source to build up an educated society.
Having said that, he indirectly asserted the importance of having an educated society in which, to his mind, public schools play a big role.
Now, wisdom is the subjective analysis off the quotation. Public schools (these days) are, to my viewpoint, SOLELY RESPONSIBLE to transmogrify education from its “once revered sanctuary of wisdom” to “now commercially manipulated club for knowledge” where students are not trained to be socially responsible or CRITICAL THINKER, they are, I am afraid, one of the key reasons behind creating social disorder/s.
Interestingly, even their proposed educational patterns for students conflict with their own self-imposed-cum-self-acknowledged credo, they believe transformation of the mind in purely didactic context, but the outcome of the “produced” mind that we come across is surprisingly horrible.
We get the mind embedded by an obsession of “Firing ambition” with equally “firing resolution” for their “achievement”, which eventually result-in a mind more confused, distraught and psychologically convulsed with insecurity, frustration and belligerence.
Had public schools been so responsible for creating an educated mind, we would certainly have a GREAT society with critical thinkers and intellectuals.
To sum up – We would have a society devoid of the “Un-Critical Mind”, had public schools or government schools (especially in India) been responsibly adhered to the true value of education.
Saying, "something is better than nothing" is perhaps an act of endorsing such Education that we just accept grudgingly.
