I really don’t have idea what critiques or reviewers say about this movie. However, what I genuinely felt is that this is indeed a good, family based, well scripted and entertaining movie of the year. People will surely have their quality time with watching the film and this is the reason that I felt reviewing this film to my own experience.
The movie is solely based on a moderately literate housewife (Sakshi) who has been a butt of joke for her family members, not because she is not handy at household works or culinary jobs, but because of her being illiterate in English. She is the laughing stock among her family members. Even her daughter insults and foul-mouths as English is all Greek to this leading protagonist of the movie.
Fortunately, her luck favors her. She landed herself in New York to attend wedding ceremony of her sister’s daughter. She becomes quite smitten with New York’s fast-paced and people’s friendly lifestyle and atmosphere there. However, she is not oblivious to the fact of being so ignorant and dim-witted to English language. She always feels inferiority complex with English speaking people. Even she has to pocket humiliation at a restaurant where the receptionist lady goes berserk as she has to take the trouble of dealing with her (Sakshi) with all futile explanations.
Eventually, she comes to know about an English learning coaching centre. She enrolls herself to the institution. Here she befriends with other incumbents. Very soon, she gains a good grasp on this language. Not fluently but she is not feeling so bad at speaking English. When the D-day approaches, she delivers an improvised but very effective speech in English, lending a chain of surprising reactions to the rest of her family members including her hubby and daughter.
The move is excellent and worth-watching with family. It has also a good lesson – that every family member should respect to each other. Spouse should be sensitive and respectful to each other. Most importantly, one must never underestimates other as the time has power to turn even a ugly looking coal into precious and elegant diamond.
What I don’t like in the movie –
The movie conveys too much importance and indispensability of English. It has accentuated importance of English that how can this language transform your life into respectable, dignified and honorable entity. You become self-confident. People will love and appreciate you. In essence, if you know how to speak English, your life is truly worth living for.
I wish any movie was there to stress the importance of Hindi as this language is scorned even in its own country. She is becoming old-fashioned and an object of humiliation. This is so saddening to see people's pathetic reaction to Hindi.
